Task 3 - Type Design and Communication

Lecture

INSTRUCTIONS

SKETCHES

Week 7

We have to explore different writing materials by drawing the strokes. The black marker has two brushes at either end, one thicker and the other thinner.

Fig 1.1 Tools

Use 5 different pens to draw on grid paper and draw the characteristics of their strokes.

Fig 1.2 Exercise

After the exploration, this is the finalise of the letters.

Fig 1.3 Exercise

When I use these markers, I think the  STANDARD FINE feel is better for me, and I prefer the pen that can make changes in thickness. So for the rest of the drawing, I used STANDARD FINE.

After few variation, I can finalise the design that I want to work with, so I wrote them down several times to give consistency.

DIGITALISATION

First create a 1000pt x 1000pt artboard in abode illustrator

Fig 2.1 Interface layout

According to Mr. Vinod's instructions, the length of the drawing board is extended so that it has enough space to complete the creation of the font.

Fig 2.2 Interface layout

Create auxiliary lines according to Mr. Vinod's instructions

Fig 2.3 Interface layout

I took a line suggested by Mr.Vinod as a reference in my practice draft.

Fig 2.4 Interface layout

According to the method that Mr.Vinod taught me in class, I started with the pen tool to create A basic "A".

Fig 2.5 Preliminary alphabet

Then use the width tool to work on the details, such as some pen details, until you are satisfied.

Fig 2.6 The letter "A" is complete

Then I use the same method to complete all the letters.

Fig 2.7 All the letters are complete

Fig 2.8 Final Outcome of Digitization.

After receiving feedback from Mr.Vinod, he suggested that I change the height of the letters because they now look different. In addition, he recommends using Adobe Illustrator to implement these changes instead of redoing them on paper.

After making changes to the original font I had created earlier, Mr. Vinod began asking us to finalize the font format and create a ", ". ! # ".

Development in Fontlab

After AI production, I began to use FontLab, the software recommended by Mr.Vinod, for follow-up production. I copied and pasted the fonts I designed in the AI into Fontlab.

Fig 3.1  Copy and pasting fonts to Fontlab

Use the same method to import all the digitized letters into Fontlab

Fig 3.2  Copy and pasting fonts to Fontlab

Then I have condensed all the letters

  • Fig 3.3 Adjusted letters

After finalizing the adjustments for all the letters, I proceeded to export the font and downloaded it onto my laptop. With the font now available, I could begin working on my poster design using Adobe Illustrator.

Fig 3.4 Export the font from FontLab.

POSTER DESIGN

I imported the finalised font into adobe illustrator, to work with poster, to promote my typeface. I research through chat gpt, and make a sentence according to word suggestion.I try to find inspiration on Pinterest

With reference to the font posters from Pinterest, here is a preliminary poster that I created

Fig 4.4 Poster Design

Mr.Vinod helped me modify my poster in class, and the new poster looks more designed

Then, with the help of my classmates, I used Adobe Photoshop to make a background of marble texture with lower transparency, and then imported Adobe Illustrator to add a background of marble texture to the poster.

week 8: This is an amazing experience. I have never tried to create a font before. This task allows me to experience the process of font creation, which will be an important experience for my future study.

week 9: I design fonts with a lot of inspiration that I think is interesting. Some of my inspirations were a bit complicated and I chose a design that was easy to digit·ize.

week 10:When I was digitizing, I had some problems with some letters, but Mr. Vinod saw it and gave me a solution.

week 11: General feedback: Make sure all the letters are on the same level, pay attention to angles, and that the style of the letters is consistent. Specific feedback: Create a auxiliary line where the height of the letters is not uniform so that they are all on the same level.

week 12:

General feedback: Mr. Vinod made changes to each of our posters and helped us change the texture of the posters. Specific feedback: Font line spacing is very important, establish a guide line to ensure that each line of font line spacing is the same.

REFLECTION

Experience
This is an amazing experience. I have never tried to create a font before. This task allows me to experience the process of font creation, which will be an important experience for my future study.

Observation
I never knew the steps of making fonts before, and I thought it would be difficult. After Mr. Vinod's guidance, I learned how to make fonts, which felt so good.

Findings
A work you don't try, you never know if you can do it, you look at the task is difficult, but when you really try, problems will be solved one by one, don't underestimate your own energy.

FURTHER READING

A Type Primer by John Kane.

                                                   Fig. 6.1 A Type Primer

I chose this book on the recommendation of Mr. Vinod. This is a good book for beginners and a very practical book. It  talks about the fundamentals of typography and the history of development. There are detailed explanations of letters, words and sentences. I know a little bit about the text in the book because Mr. Vinod explained it to us in the lecture. Finally, the importance of grid to text and how to use grid are discussed. This book is of great help to me as a beginner in typesetting.

I started this project by binge-watching multiple videos from the pasta Granny and decided to make this video on how to make flake bread. Flatbread is found all over Italy, and Enrica shares her recipe for "crostoli" (it's plural and singular is crostolo) here. Lard is a key ingredient, and the way it's made makes delicious pancakes.
