FEEDBACK
Refer to Swiss Design to re-layout, and pay attention to the balance of the overall composition.
The edge of the image needs to exceed the drawing board by 0.5cm (bleed) to ensure the complete effect when printed.
The letters must be close to the auxiliary lines to keep the layout neat and consistent.
The title font is too cute and does not match the overall style. It needs to be replaced with a simpler and more professional font.
REFLECTION
Experience
Throughout this course, I navigated the complexities of publishing design, from conceptualizing content to mastering layout techniques. Under Mr. Hijjaz's guidance, I worked on creating a 32-page eBook about my hometown, Heilongjiang. This process required a balance between storytelling and visual presentation, pushing me to develop a narrative that was not only personal but also engaging for readers. The technical aspects, such as managing grids, implementing bleed for printing, and ensuring typographic hierarchy, were initially challenging but became manageable with practice. Collaborating with peers during feedback sessions also provided invaluable insights, enhancing my designs in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
Observation
One key observation I made is how much visual harmony influences a reader's experience. Mr. Hijjaz often emphasized Swiss design principles, particularly the importance of structure and alignment. I noticed that even minor misalignments or inconsistent typography could disrupt the visual flow, affecting the overall professionalism of the layout. Additionally, the choice of typeface, image placement, and white space significantly impacted how the content was perceived—whether it felt modern, traditional, or chaotic. Through iterations, I learned that good design isn’t just about creativity but about precision and attention to detail.
Findings
This course taught me that publishing design is as much a technical craft as it is an artistic endeavor. One of my biggest takeaways was the role of feedback in refining a project. Mr. Hijjaz’s advice to adjust my title font and adhere more strictly to auxiliary lines elevated the final result significantly. I also discovered that extending images beyond the artboard for bleed was a critical detail for professional printing—a concept I had previously overlooked. Ultimately, I realized that successful publishing design requires a combination of storytelling, technical accuracy, and a deep understanding of how design choices influence readers’ engagement with the material.
