Task 3: Type Exploration and Application

LECTURES

 Lectures are done inTask 1

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 3: Type Exploration and Application

For Task 3, we get to dictate our own project. We are to either design a typeface to solve a problem in the area of our interest (Graphic Design, UI/UX, Animation, Entertainment Design, or any other) or explore the use of a typeface in our area of interest. The end outcome would be the designed typeface in its application - any kind of format related to the issue being solved or explored: animation, 3D, print, ambient, projection, movie title or game title, use of different materials, etc.

But my three ideas were not approved by Mr. Vinod. He gave me an idea about tuscan font.

Mr.Vinod showed me how to create the letter "H" in class.

I followed the method taught to me by Mr. Viond to complete the creation of other letters, numbers and symbols.

I showed the completed font to Mr. Viond, and the feedback I received was that the lines of the uppercase letter "A" and the lowercase letters "i", "j" and "k" looked very thick, and they did not look like the same font as the other letters. After getting feedback I started making changes

After completing the creation of the letters, I began to import the letters into fontlab to adjust the letter spacing.

Feedback

Week 9
Specific feedback: Idea 1 can be expanded to making a Tuscan font, but it requires very good production skills to implement. Idea 3 is mainly about reducing content, which doesn't work well for long paragraphs.
General feedback: Might need to rethink and find more viable ideas.

Week 10
Specific Feedback: The counterspace of the letters should be considered, how much of a space is given in the counterspace of letters like "G". Letters like "B" still does not look resolved, and the triangle inside letter "D" is too sharp.
General Feedback: Make sure the triangles in the letters are not too sharp, it should be used sparingly and strategically. Some of the points can be rounder.

Week 11
Specific Feedback: Try putting the uppercase and lowercase letters side by side and see how it works. The ascender is a bit too tall, so most likely the x-height will have to be bigger.
General Feedback: Complete the lowercase, numbers and punctuation. Start thinking about the application and the solution to the problem.

Week 12
Specific Feedback: Have to make letters "w" and "m" much wider for both lowercase and uppercase.
General Feedback: Explore more with the applications, and maximise as much as possible using the typeface. Explore the type horizontally and have a proper colour scheme which can be used for a IG feed.

REFLECTION

Experience
Honestly speaking, before I started working on this task, I thought I was going to struggle a lot with the time given to complete the typeface and the applications. Working on this task reminded me of Typography where we had to craft a few of the chosen letters and punctuations. However, I actually enjoyed crafting the uppercase and lowercase letters this time around. I'm glad that I learned from my lesson from previous semester and chose to go with a more manageable typeface that I can complete within the short period of time given.

Observation
This task has required me to look at all my letters in an overall picture to judge whether or not it is consistent. I realise that even though I try to keep consistency by following all the measurements, some letters just look very out of place. From there, that is when I have to adjust accordingly so that they look like they belong in the same family. It was a lot of trial and error and finding what looks right for some of the letters in my typeface.

Findings
I was reminded again about how to craft our punctuation marks like the period, comma, colon and semi-colon. Although they look similar in size, I realise that the size of a comma should be slightly smaller than a period. Not only that, I realise that the height of an ascender is much shorter than I initially thought. When I was crafting my letters with ascenders, I had to compare it with reference fonts to find out that it is just 1.5x the x-height.

Information Design - Project 1

26.1.2023 - 23.2.2023 (Week 3 - Week 7) Song Yang (0355576) Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Creative Media  Information Design Instructable Infographic poster & Motion graphic INSTRUCTIONS For this project, we were assigned to create a teachable poster infographic and an animated infographic video from a video recipe, explaining how to cook/bake our chosen dishes from the Pasta Grandma YouTube channel. I started this project by binge-watching multiple videos from the pasta Granny and decided to make this video on how to make flake bread. Flatbread is found all over Italy, and Enrica shares her recipe for "crostoli" (it's plural and singular is crostolo) here. Lard is a key ingredient, and the way it's made makes delicious pancakes.
