TASKS

Designing Custom Boxes for Non-Boxed Items:
The objective of this assignment is to develop your skills in creating custom packaging solutions for items that do not come in traditional box packaging. By the end of this assignment, you should be able to demonstrate your ability to design functional, creative, and visually appealing boxes that enhance the packaging and presentation of non-boxed items.

Task Description:
Item Selection: Choose two non-boxed items from your daily surroundings. The size of the item is between 15cm to 20cm. These items should not come in traditional box packaging but should be relatively small in size (e.g., a mug, a book, a pair of sunglasses, a candle, etc.).

Item Selection
Item 1: Perfume bottle

Fig 1.1 Perfume bottle

Reasons for choosing items :

Aesthetic value: Perfume bottles usually have a unique design and aesthetic appearance. Designing a box for them can show creativity and artistic design capabilities, while also reflecting attention to detail.

Functionality: Perfume is a delicate and fragile product, so its packaging needs to be not only beautiful but also provide protection.

Market audience: The perfume market is broad, covering consumers of all ages and genders. Therefore, designing the box for perfume bottles needs to take into account the needs and preferences of the target market, which helps to cultivate the ability of market analysis and user experience design.

Item 2: Xbox controller

Fig 1.2 Xbox controller

Reasons for choosing items :

Practicality: The Xbox controller is an electronic product accessory, and the product safety and user experience need to be considered when designing the packaging box. This packaging design needs to take into account physical protection, ease of use, and appearance appeal.

Wide audience: Game controllers have a wide range of users, from young people to adult players. When designing packaging, it is necessary to consider how to attract consumers of different ages, which helps to understand and apply brand promotion and marketing strategies.

Innovation: The video game industry is full of innovation and creativity. Designing a packaging box for the Xbox controller can inspire creative thinking and challenge the limitations of traditional packaging design.

Prototype

  • Perfume bottle

I digitally created the die lines in Adobe Illustrator based on the sketch I drew

Fig 2.2 Perfume bottle packaging die cutting line

After determining the die cut line, I completed the jacket of the box by laser cutting.

After assembly, the size fits the perfume bottle very well and provides good protection. The window design allows you to see the style of the perfume without opening the package.

The same laser cutting was used to make the prototype of the Xbox controller.

In addition, in order to increase the stability of the Xbox controller in the box, I added a paper bracket to the package to ensure that the controller does not shake easily in the box.

I tried to put the stand and handle inside the box, luckily the box could support their weight and the presence of the stand was important.

FEEDBACK

Week 4: The handle is designed to be rounded; a sharp square shape would be dangerous.

Week 6: When designing the size of the knife pattern, take into account the waste of wrapping paper and do not leave it too large.

REFLAECTION

Experience:
The experience of designing paper boxes for perfume bottles and Xbox controllers in this course was both simple and insightful. The challenge was to create packaging that was both functional and beautiful within the constraints of using only white paper. It was interesting to create unique packaging based on the characteristics of different items and to develop our creativity.

Observations:
We observed that there are many ways to innovate and differentiate packaging even with limited material choices. The simplicity of the white paper box required us to pay special attention to the shape, opening mechanism, and structural integrity. It was clear that even minimalist designs can effectively convey a sense of quality and purpose.

Findings:
Key findings from this course include the realization that effective packaging design does not always require complex materials or intricate designs. The main focus should be on ensuring the safety of the product and enhancing the user experience. We learned the importance of structural details, such as cushioning and compartments, especially for delicate items such as perfume bottles. This experience highlighted that simplicity can play an important role in design and that thoughtful execution of basic elements can have a significant impact.

I started this project by binge-watching multiple videos from the pasta Granny and decided to make this video on how to make flake bread. Flatbread is found all over Italy, and Enrica shares her recipe for "crostoli" (it's plural and singular is crostolo) here. Lard is a key ingredient, and the way it's made makes delicious pancakes.
