Reflection

Experience

Throughout this semester, the Publishing Design course under the guidance of Mr. Hijjaz has been an insightful journey into the art of storytelling through design. My primary project was creating a 32-page eBook about my hometown, Heilongjiang. This project required me to integrate personal narratives with professional design principles. Initially, I struggled with layout balance, typographic consistency, and technical considerations like bleed and grid alignment. However, with constructive feedback and continuous practice, I developed a stronger understanding of how to craft visually compelling and cohesive designs. The iterative nature of the project helped me refine both the content and layout, leading to a final product that was polished and meaningfu

Observation

I observed that the smallest details can make a significant impact on the overall design. For instance, misaligned text or inconsistent type sizes can disrupt the reader's experience and make the layout feel unprofessional. Mr. Hijjaz emphasized the importance of Swiss design principles, such as grid-based layouts, white space utilization, and precise alignment. Another key observation was how the combination of typography and imagery influences the tone of the publication. When I replaced the overly playful title font with a cleaner and more neutral typeface, it immediately elevated the eBook’s aesthetic, making it feel more polished and professional.

Findings

This course has taught me that publishing design requires a balance between creativity and technical precision. One of the most valuable lessons was learning how to design for print, such as incorporating a 0.5 cm bleed for images to ensure clean edges after trimming. Additionally, I discovered that storytelling in design involves more than words; the layout, typography, and visual hierarchy are equally critical in guiding the reader’s experience. Finally, I found that constructive feedback is indispensable for growth. Mr. Hijjaz’s advice to adhere to auxiliary lines and maintain consistent spacing helped me realize the importance of discipline in design, which I’ll carry forward into future projects.

Information Design - Project 1

26.1.2023 - 23.2.2023 (Week 3 - Week 7) Song Yang (0355576) Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Creative Media  Information Design Instructable Infographic poster & Motion graphic INSTRUCTIONS For this project, we were assigned to create a teachable poster infographic and an animated infographic video from a video recipe, explaining how to cook/bake our chosen dishes from the Pasta Grandma YouTube channel. I started this project by binge-watching multiple videos from the pasta Granny and decided to make this video on how to make flake bread. Flatbread is found all over Italy, and Enrica shares her recipe for "crostoli" (it's plural and singular is crostolo) here. Lard is a key ingredient, and the way it's made makes delicious pancakes.
